Time line:

1837 Born, probably Marylebone to George Lanning and Mary nee Taylor
1838 Mother died
1840 baptised with two elder brothers when family were living at Tottenham Street
1841 Not on census with widowed father. Nor with Uncle Frederick or Grandmother Jane who had married James McLeod. All three families were living in George St St George, Hanover Square, Westminster. Elder sister Mary was in Manchester with Rebecca Horseman nee Taylor. Most likely, she was with Uncle Thomas Lanning and his family. Unfortunately, exhaustive searches have failed to find Thomas, who should have been living just off Theobalds Road, Marylebone.
1851 In Greenwich, with Uncle Frederick
1861 Missing - not with George, Frederick, Thomas (Rebecca is now married to George and Jane is living wih them)
1862 a Jane Ann Lanning, of full age, marries Robert Hodges in St Lukes. Father George, occupation "Farmer". Witnesses do not appear to be Lanning family.

Questions:

Can anyone find Jane in 1861?
Could George's occupation on the 1862 marriage (on Ancestry) be Turner (in 1841 he is down as Iron Turner) rather than Farmer?
Jane's cousin Charlotte (daughter of tHomas Lanning) married John Cole in 1853. Who was John's father and can anyone find Charlotte in 1861?
I'm fairly sure that Jane is already with Robert Hodges in 1861, but I'd welcome other eyes on the subject.

I had forgotten that Charlotte too had gone walkabout in 1851.

This is Thomas, with second "wife" in 1851: HO107 piece 1513 folio 343 page 37 at 43 Theobald's Road Holborn. Charlotte was approx born mid 1820s.

Hi Phoenix, looking at again I think it does say Turner. I so interested in Robert that I didn't read his wife's details carefully enough.

Am I forgiven?

As my mate read it to me as Farmer, I think you are, Sue!

This is Charlotte in 1861, in Judd St: RG09 piece 104 folio 109 page 23
aged 26, so perhaps born c 1835.

George Lanning ran a coffee shop in Judd St at one stage, while John Cole was clearly a clerk to Charlotte's father, Thomas Lanning.

I'd just found that Phoenix when I lost my connection!

I don't know if you remember but Robert Hodges and his daughter Emma died in Poplar. A minor coincidence, perhaps?

John Cole in 1851 (don't know if you have this)

Class: HO107; Piece: 1514; Folio: 6; Page: 4;

Ooh, thank you, Sue. So Charlotte wasn't being immoral in 1851!

Sue, when it comes to the Lannings, there is no such thing as coincidence. It's not even my family, but I grew up on the stories of Tom Lanning, Great Granny Lanning and "Lord" McLeod.

Tom and George seem to have been very close. You seem to find if one child settles in a part of London others will lodge with them or turn up a couple of streets away.

The Coles in 1841? On the right hand side half way down (dreadful writing!)

COLE, Jno
HOLBORN, Middlesex

Okay, so "my" John Cole b circa 1831 is Son of John Cole fruiterer and Sarah. Living with father in Grays Inn Lane in 1841 and 1851. So the Cole connection is coincidence or very distant. John Cole snr is aged 58 in 1851, a retired green grocer.

But there still seems to be no other candidate for the Jane living with Robert Hodges

No I haven't -it's someone else! I've just reread your thread and you've got Jane in 1851....

Sorry to raise your hopes!

That's her cousin Jane (they used a fairly small pool of names, lol!)

I'm beginning to think that "my" John Coles has nothing to do with Robert OR Jane and it's all just a mistake by the enumerator....

I still can't find an alternative for Jane in 1861.

We keep crossing posts! I really must leave this now - I've an interview tomorrow that I ought to be preparing for....

Just to confuse matters, here is a third Jane in 1851:
1851 Census
JEFFERY, Sarah
LINTON, Cambridgeshire
HO107 piece 1761 folio 313 page 10
(Sarah was the mother of George's two wives and she too remarried to a Mr Jeffery)

John and Ann Coles seem to be living blamelessly in Shoreditch, having their children baptised and no daughter called Jane amongst them (or son called Robert)

The only scenario I can think of is enumerator error. Jane's granny, Jane McLeod, adds twenty years to her age on each census, just to confuse the issue.
