Any chance the 1837 son's birth was registered, or was he born before July 1st?

Kit, maybe you already know that John Taylor is in the book Men, women, and property in England, 1780-1870 by Robert John Morris?

I have no doubt this is the family you're looking for. It says that John Taylor's father, also John Taylor, made his will on 7 July 1831 and died eleven days later. The younger John received the public house in the will. It also says how he abandoned it. The extended family and businesses are listed on Union Street, Line Street, Templar Lane.

There's an awful lot more information there about the family, the businesses, the wills. Google "john taylor" bricklayer "union street" leeds and it should bubble right up to the top of the results. It starts on page 198: "Here was the world of John Taylor, builder and bricklayer."

I also see John Taylor, bricklayer, 27 Union Street, in the Transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for Leeds in Pigot's Directory of 1829, on Genuki:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Leeds/Leeds29Dry.html

My MMMF David Crampton 1807-1872 was a mason in nearby Horsforth. Perhaps he did business with the Taylors? Something about this neighborhood rang a bell with me as soon as I saw your post. I've walked these streets on old maps looking for some branch of my family.

It seems your John Taylor's parents may have been John and Hannah. I can see a "snippet" in Google books that seems to refer to them. Robert seems to be the other son, brother to your John. (My search terms were "John Taylor" bricklayer leeds.)

Janet that is fantastic info. I'm off to look now.

Kate the 1837 baptism was a job lot for Tom Hall Taylor (DOB 20/6/1834) and his elder sister, Hannah Taylor (born 8/9/1830)

Oooh, that's exciting!

I don't think I would have Googled a name like John Taylor and ever expected to find anything on the right person! lol

I like the book Janet, I just need to get pages 202 and 203. I hate previews. I had no idea that John owned property, if only temporarily.

I wouldn't have either Merry. Sounds so simple when someone else does it.

How do I get a will that went through York? I can't find it on the TNA.

Hannah may be the second wife or they didn't rush into marriage.

I found this from: http://www.daltondatabank.org/yorkshire.html

Origins hold the Index and probate copies can be obtained through them too.

http://www.origins.net/

I jusy looked at the index to death duty registers 1796 - 1903 on FMP and can confirm JT's entry is on there, for the year 1731, probate granted through PCY. Executor David Kirkman.

Thanks Merry.

Is it worthwhile spending an extra 2 pounds and having a look for a month? Also is it easy to cancel the sub?

I've no idea, as I've never used the site.

There isn't very much on the site; I always go for the 72 hours or whatever it is and easily get through everything I want to look at within that time. That saves the bother of cancelling. I don't know how easy it is to cancel but this is what it says in the terms of service:

9.3 You can cancel your current subscription or renewal of your subscription at any time up to 7 days prior to the date of expiry by emailing us at [email protected] but no refund will be made for the unused period of a current subscription.

My WorldCat website says there are no libraries in Australia that have the Men, women, and property in England, 1780-1870 by Robert John Morris. I see a couple of relatively less expensive new copies of it available for sale here:

Also one here:

Good job! I couldn't make it cough it all up for me. It looked to me as if these references perhaps point to a fuller listing elsewhere, what do you think?? I think the 728 and 729 are item numbers (don't think they're page numbers, though they could be). I'm curious to know what else might be out there.

If you're interested,it's available to buy (I'm tempted myself):

Also, the National Library of Australia (NLA) in Canberra and the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne have Thoresby Society publications, including possibly Volume 26.

Toni, your Taylors are in here. Can you get in?

Found them while looking for Libby's Naylors. Not too sure how useful it is for you. Just confirmation of what you already know.

Toni, if you can wait a bit (and remind me, lol!) I can dredge it out next time I go to Kew as it should be on microfilm there.

Death Duty registers don't always quote the will in full, but they do show relationships not specifically stated in wills. And how much everyone gets, which isn't always the same as how much they are left!
