Hi

I also have a 4g grandfather named James Laurie but I don't think we are related.

My MMMFMF, James Laurie III was from Dumfries (probably Kirkmahoe) and died at Milliganton, Dumfries in 1828.

Probably a really common name in Scotland !!

Cheers

Di

Hi Di, most of my Scottish names seem to be really common. :d

I have almost given up hope of finding early Scottish marriages and baptisms.

This is a possible baptism, but I have no confidence that it is the correct one. I don't know how good the coverage of the IGI is for this part of Scotland.

name: James Laurie
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 30 Jan 1766
baptism/christening place: BANCHORY-TERNAN, KINCARDINE
father's name: Charles Laurie
father's birthplace:
indexing project (batch) number: C11252-4

On second thoughts, my James' first child was born in 1782 so perhaps this baptism is too late.

Having gone round in circles with the McLeans in my tree, I thought I'd have a look at this.

On Family Search, there is a James Laurie baptised in 1750 in Maryculter. Parents are Charles Laurie and Mary Ross.

This public tree on Ancestry appears unsourced at first glance, but has lots of info.

Shona, many thanks for that. I'm not very practised at Scottish research. I hadn't thought to look to see if there was an Ancestry tree, so I'm off to have a good look.

Shona, it certainly seems to be well researched so far but the sources would have been handy.
Many thanks for finding this - I will have fun checking out the information.

According to this tree, James Laurie married again after Christian Milne died and had quite a few more children.

You could contact the tree owner to ask about the sources.

I've found quite a bit on Family Search, and I'll get some credits for Scotland's People in the not too distant future to check out the PRs.

Shona, I had thought of contacting the tree owner too.
