Hello all,

Can anyone do any better than me on Percival - I completely lose him after 1881....

Percival Pemberton Jenkins born 1873 Stockbridge Hampshire

Parents Edwin W Jenkins (Grocer) and Elizabeth.

He is in 1881 census with his family living in Wimbledon at 25 Ridgway

He has 3 brothers who I've found in 1881-1901:
Ebenezer Gilbert Jenkins c1867 Waltham Chase Hants (drapers clerk)
Norman Lindsay C Jenkins 1872 Stockbridge (drapers clerk)
Cecil Wiltshire Jenkins 1877 Wimbledon (Stationer)

I'm actually searching for an F Jenkins from Wimbledon who played in a football team there in 1891. It's the same team as both Norman and Cecil Jenkins played for and as there is no other obvious candidate for "F" in the Wimbledon area I'm assuming for now the handwriting on the source is bad and it could possibly be E or P.

Trying to work out if Percival was even still alive in 1891 to rule him in or out.

I know it's a bit of an assumption but a lot of the other players have been brothers/cousins as it's connected to a school so it's a hunch I"d like to run with for now.

Thank you in advance.

Zoe

There's a Percival Jenkins aged 18 at Paddington a drapers clerk. He says born Botley, Hants which is nowhere near Stockbridge, but there are no Jenkins births anything like 'Percival' b in South Stoneham district which covers Botley. I don't see two from Hants in 1881 either.

Nothing to add about Percival, but I was struck by the above census. Look at the 'far flung' places they came from. I wonder which store they all worked for? Surely it must have been quite a famous one to attract staff from all over the British Isles.

Just explored the 1891 census a bit further and realised the store was probably Whiteleys in Westbourne Grove.

From Wikipedia..........
By 1890 over 6,000 staff were employed in the business, most of them living in company-owned male and female dormitories, having to obey 176 rules and working 7 am to 11 pm, six days a week.

I did a display on Allders of Croydon once. Their employees were equally far flung. The store consisted of several small shops knocked into one and I gather that the women's dormitory was nowhere near the men's:rolleyes::d

My OH has a book about Wimbledon football, and is looking for Jenkins...

Jenkins P appears in a table for 1895/6 for Wimbledon Old Centrals (as Wimbledon was known then), played 30 games in that season and scored 8 goals.

There's a team photo for the 1895/6 season with NC Jenkins (player, secretary & treasurer) and F Jenkins (misprint? your man?) if you need it I can scan it.

Jill,

If it's not too much hassle, yes please. I'd guess the guys i"m helping with the research will probably have the book/photos but you never know. And I'd quite like to see who i"m researching anyway.

Thank you

Zoe
