Annie Eliza Matthews was born 07 Dec 1876 at 90, George's Road, Lower Holloway, Islington, London,
the only daughter of Thomas Matthews and Emma Matthews, nee Moore.

no baptism found

Annie had two older brothers, Thomas Emmetts Matthews and John William Matthews.

In 1877 John William died. and in 1879 Annie's father Thomas also died.

Annie is scholar, aged 4, living 19 Nelson Buildings*, Greenwich, Kent
with her mother Emma Garvie, brother Thomas E. Matthews 14, office boy,
and her step father, John Garvie, engine driver.
[*described as 40 tenements, "improved dwellings for the working classes", The Times, Tuesd. 16th Feb, 1869 p. 12]

26 Jan 1884 Annie's half-brother John Garvie died at Walton Road, East Molesey, Surrey, aged 2 years 7 months of tarbes mesenterica. Registered by mother on 28 January.
[Annie's brother Henry had died in August 1868 of the same illness, aged 5 weeks].

In an undated letter Annie wrote from Kenley (so during or after WW2) she said "I think I lived near [Wimbledon] when I was a little girl. It was very much country then like Croydon and Purly [sic] all built on now".

01 Nov 1887 - 14 Oct 1889 "Eliza Mathews" [sic] attended Tottenham Road School, Hackney.
Her home address was 10B Elizabeth Buildings.

Annie married Jeuel Jabez Gray 24 January 1907 at St Matthias, Stoke Newington.
Both were living at 34 Cowper Road, adjacent to the church.


They settled at 22 Brooke Road, Stoke Newington where their first 3 children, Jabez, Jeuel and Harry were born

1909 Annie's stepfather John Garvie died in Hackney.

1916 they moved to a shop at 165 Stoke Newington Church Street, where their last child William was born June 1917.
Annie's mother lived round the corner at Woodlea Road.
Jeuel's brother Fred and Annie's youngest brother Will were lodgers and brother Lemuel lived nearby at one time.


During WW1 family evacuated to 18 Park Road, Kenley, Surrey

1953 Annie and her son William and his wife Ruth all moved to newly-built council house, 8 Broadway Close, Sanderstead Surrey.

Death Death cert:
24th October 1956, 29 Wentworth Way, Sanderstead Surrey [house where Annie's 2nd son, George Gray lived] 79 years, of 8 Broadway Close, Sanderstead [where her youngest son William Frederick Randall Gray lived - the gardens of both houses backed onto eachother], Coulsdon & Purley. Widow of Jeuel Jabez Gray, a picture frame maker.
Cause of death: 1. a. myocardial infarction b. atheroma Certified by Jas. Thorpe Burridge, MRCS.
Informant: Ruth S. Gray, daughter-in-law, 8 Broadway Close, Sanderstead [wife of William] 26th October 1956.

Annie was buried in the churchyard of All Saints, Sanderstead [near Sanderstead Pond] Surrey.
Gravestone reads " In memory of ANNIE ELIZA GRAY Died 24 October 1956 age 79"
[at a later date, these words added: "and her son JABEZ JOHN THOMAS GRAY Died 24 October 1975 age 67".
