Quick Question
Can anyone tell me what registration district and county Haydock (now part of St Helens Merseyside) would be in 1861.

Do you have an 1861 address to check?

No address I'm trying to look up a birth on the 1901 census it gives her birthplace as Haydock Lancashire but when I search on free bmd there are no Haydocks coming up.
her name is Ann Sharples dob abt 1861

Her place of birth varies a bit as you go back through the censuses. I can't find her in 1861.

1901 1861 Haydock
1891 1860 St Helens
1881 1860 St Helens
1871 1859 Parr
1861 ??

UPDATE Ah, her father, John Sharples, isn't married to her mum in 1861, but they are together.....John S, Martha Upton and Ann Upton aged 1. b Parr which is Prescot District.

I'm wondering if I followed the right Ann now?? ;(

I reckon it's the right Ann; she's the one from that "Alice" thread. I'd also just found that family in 1861. It wouldn't be surprising to find she was born before her parents married, would it?

Going back it does seem to be the same woman......Parents John and Martha, illegitimate children with Joshua Lloyd?

Depending on which birthplace is right you could try:

Births Sep 1859
UPTON Annie Warrington 8c 139

or

Births Mar 1860
UPTON Ann Prescot 8b 514

she's the one from that "Alice" thread

What Alice thread?

Lancashire BMD has two Ann Upton birth registrations listed for St Helens in 1860 but it doesn't give mother's maiden name.

Oh, well that's a few more dead brain cells then as I just did most of that again by myself. I know I did make a contribution to that thread at the beginning, but I didn't remember it.

Found their marriage on Lancashire Online Parish Clerks site - 24 Feb 1862 St Peter, Parr, Lancashire:
John Sharples full age, miner, bachelor, of Parr
Martha Upton, full age, spinster, of Parr
His father Thomas Sharples, miner
Her father Henry Upton, miner
Witnesses Thomas Sharples and Jane Layland.

The marriage is on the GRO indexes Mar 1862 Prescot, vol 8b, page 671, but the page number is transcribed as 171 for John. I would hestitate to submit a correction because on all the versions of the image that I've looked at, you can't actually see the loop part of the 6!

That's weird - Lancs OPC has a baptism 28 Oct 1860 at St Peter Parr for Esther Sharples, born 6 Feb 1860, parents John and Martha Sharples of Parr, miner. I wonder if it's a mistake?

Curiouser and curiouser

I also found out that Martha Upton had Ann Upton before she was with John Sharples Then Ann's name changes to Sharples.

I found John and Martha's marriage

24 Feb 1862 St Peter, Parr, Lancashire, Parr is in St Helens which fits.
