Burial on Lancashire OPC gives his age as 89 and abode as Great Eccleston. If the age is right he was born about 1764.

I can't see him in 1851 at the moment. There is a burial for a Jane Barrow age 29 of Great Eccleston listed on Lancs OPC at St Michael on Wyre, 22 Apr 1844, but there is a death reg on Lancs BMD for Jane Barrow age 79 in 1844 so I think that would be his wife and that the age on Lancs OPC is wrong.

Address on the 1841 census is Eaves.

We couldn't find them in the 1851 either. But from the 1841 we calculate Jane's birth as abt 1765 which is right for the 1844 death (she was at least baptized in 1765, at St. Michael-on-Wyre, residing in Inskip-with-Sowerby.

For some reason I hadn't seen that death record on the Lancashire OPC - thanks!

We do, though, have them in Woodplumpton for the 1841 census, both aged 75.

The ages on the 1841 census were rounded down, so age 75 means anything between 75 and 79. Yes, they are in the parish / township of Woodplumpton in 1841 but the actual address is Eaves. If my OH were here he could probably tell me all about Eaves but he's out this evening!

Hmmm, a random snippet I found by Googling, which may or may not be accurate, and may or may not be connected with your Matthew (could Thomas be his father or uncle, perhaps?):

THOMAS BARROW, ARTIST.

Thomas Barrow, the son of Matthew Barrow, was born at
Great Eccleston I5th January, 1737. He is said to have studied
for a time under Romney. He painted the portraits of many
people in the Fylde district, and some of them show considerable
merit. 1 He died at Great Eccleston, and was buried at St.
Michaels in 1822.

If you think that Thomas Barrow could be connected to your Matthew Barrow, Thomas's will is listed on the Lancashire Will Search, so it should be available from Lancashire Record Office.

Thomas the artist would have been contemporary to Mathew, but there were scads of Barrows in that part of Lancashire then. I couldn't turn up a Thomas, born ~1737 except for one in Burtonwood (or Burton-Wood) which is over 50 miles away from where my Barrows were. And they were, for the most part, ag.lab.s with an occasional bricklayer thrown in!

Would have been nice to have an artist, though...

I found something that says Thomas Barrow was born in Thistleton:

Thistleton is closer, surely, but none of the direct ancestors show up there so he'd be collateral at best...
