I was wondering if someone could give me a rough idea how much it costs to join the following (and others I may have missed) on a yearly basis for comparison.

Ancestry.com
Ancestry.com.au
FamilySearch
Find My Past
Scottish (whatever its called)

Thanks in advance

They are both good Im used to ancestry and love it and they are getting more and more all time but FMP seems to be getting more parish ones at the mo than ancestry , depends what your looking for really ;;is it scottish ones or english ???

Jood. Ancestry has a deal at the moment on their World one.

Scotlands People is a buying credits and using them as you go system.

I'm thinking whether i go with FMP or Ancestry when my Ancestry runs out.

I will always keep my The Genealogist sub no matter what though. I use that daily.

They all seem to have different prices depending on the day....lol

The easiest way is to go to their website and look at what they have and compare it with what you want.

Family Search is still free I believe. Records have to be checked for the source though.

Not sure what overseas stuff is on The Genealogist. I'll have a look.

They have all the census (much better transcriptions to Ancestry) also have all the PCC wills. You can download them free once you sub and all the Non-con records and images.

http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/

I've got what was the highest sub, but am going to go to the new highest one, as they've added loads more stuff.

borobabs
30-05-11, 23:08
HMmm bit pricey at £150 when FMP is only £103 to me with reduction but they dont have wills but dont know any of mine that left one lol

HarrysMum
31-05-11, 00:12
Babs.....I joined when they got the non-con records. If you buy them through the BMD register site they were 2pounds 50 each. It's the only other place with them......so I saved a lot of money by getting the sub.

Wills are 3pounds 50 each from TNA and they are part of the sub as well.

You just have to see what each one offers and compare it to what you want.

Jood.. if you want mainly English records, look at the exchange rate, i took out the UK sub on Ancestry as it worked out cheaper than the the Oz one,

Be careful if you use the Genealogist as they will fine you if they think you are doing look ups for others. I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

HarrysMum
31-05-11, 21:02
Wendy........they actually all have that in their fine print. I only really wanted the wills and non-con images, so it turned out a lot cheaper for me.

When I started having a look around the other records, I found their transcriptions much better than Ancestry.

It's really only fair that people mostly get their own subs otherwise you could get a group (like this site say) and all put in for one sub.

Maybe having The Genealogist strictly enforcing that rule is what has got them the money to buy so many new records.

I'd still keep my sub even if I couldn't afford any others.

I feel the same as Wendy, actually. I do agree that any site is entitled to protect its assets, but the Genealogist pursues this policy most agressively, or so I've heard. It wouldn't do for me as I fiddle around with a village tree - none of them are my ancestors!

As the others have said, why not visit each site and see if it offers you what YOU need at this stage of your research.

The Genealogist is looking good at this point. If they are fussy about who looks up what, I may have to go halves with my daughter, and let her do the lookups. I don't suppose they'd tolerate a family (mother & daughter) looking up things at different times.

Whilst Ancestry is good - I may as well look things up at the Library where it is free.

Incidentally I came across a South Australian site I'd not seen before - http://www.familyhistorysa.info/colonists.html (if anyone is interested)

Ancestry.com.au offers 3 different packages: UK Heritage (AUS $179.40), UK Heritage Plus (AUS $215.40) and World Heritage (AUS $299.88). It's currently offering a 20% discount to new subscribers, which I don't think the other Ancestry sites are doing.

If you subscribe through any of the other sites, like ancestry.co.uk, you'll need the World package if you want Australian records as well as English ones, whereas on the Aus site they're included in the cheaper UK Heritage package.

Is it as good as The Genealogist tho Mary, do you think?

I've never used the Genealogist myself, so I can't really say, but it really depends what you need. My Ancestry sub has just expired, and I'm using FMP at the moment, but I feel a bit lost without the Ancestry Australian records, especially the electoral rolls, and I much prefer the Ancestry census interface to FMP's, which is very hard to use. I remember somebody saying the Genealogist's is worse, though. Ancestry also has the English probate calendar, which I find very useful. plus lots of other records.

If you have a lot of London ancestors (which I don't), I should think Ancestry's unbeatable, because it has a huge number of London parish records, with images from the registers online. Ancestry doesn't have the 1911 census yet (not indexed, anyway), but it should be coming fairly soon.

Ancestry's transcriptions aren't great, but you get used to creative searching. FMP's are a bit better, and I believe the Genealogist's are also good. FMP is really useful for parish records (especially burials) and outgoing passenger lists (from the UK) after 1890, but Ancestry has incoming and earlier outgoing passenger lists and Aus convict records which FMP doesn't.

I've had a look on the Genealogist website to see what records it has, and I still think Ancestry is better for my needs, followed by FMP.

I forgot to mention that FMP has a new .aus site; can't remember exactly what records it has, but it might be worth checking out. Last time I looked I didn't think it was worth subscribing to it.

You should be able to get a free trial of Australian findmypast.

So that when you forget to cancel you get charged. :D:D

I suppose really they offer you membership with a 14 day trial before you pay. Just remember to cancel a couple of days before the 14 days are up. They won't use your details and if a mistake were made you'd soon get a refund when you told them. They are very good like that, no messing about.

The Australian findmypast free trial is only 24 hours and you don't need to enter any credit card details.

Make sure you pick a day when you have plenty of time to spare!

I use Ancestry and Find My past a lot and although I have The Genealogist at the moment I must admit to not using it very much as I don't seem to be able tofind anytthing much I need on it. I did get a few,4 I think, Non Conformist baptisms for OH's family so it sort of worth it but it's not a cheap site and I won't renew.

Oh did mean to say Ancestry don't have all the UK BMD's, only the Free Search ones. FMP have them all plus a lot of parish stuff being added all the time. Plus shipping records and military records.
You can pay to view with FMP if you only want the odd record.

geniebug
04-06-11, 10:34
Thanks Daphne - I can look up Ancestry free at the library - so might consider the pay as you use ones.

.

Can you explain what you mean? If you meant that Ancestry only have the BMDs that are on FreeBMD, that's not correct: they also have fully indexed BMDs from 1916-2005, and have done for a long time.

What FMP has that Ancestry doesn't is British overseas BMDs and BMDs at sea.

Yes Daphne's comment confused me too.

If you shop at tesco and get their club points, for £19 of vouchers you get ftm 2011 plus six months free on ancestry uk. For £30 of vouchers you get ftm plus six months free on ancestry overseas. I find that quite often find my past transcribes more accurately. Often I cannot find someone on ancestry, but find them on fmp. I then feed the name and age of someone on the same page into ancestry, and find what my family has been mis-transcribed as. I have just paid £93 for one year on fmp, apparently they do various trial subs. I wouldn't renew mine because it was £120 including my continuance discount After 2 months I sent in a complaint that a friend was getting a lower price, and they sent me back an offer. Hope that helps. Rita

Thanks Rita - I'm in Australia, so Tesco won't help me. I'll check out FMP again.

Be careful if you use the Genealogist as they will fine you if they think you are doing look ups for others. I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

And sometimes they ban people who have done transcribing for them. Amazingly after about five or six years I have found that I am now able to log in to their site!! (clearly they have forgotten they don't like me lol)

Janet
10-06-11, 06:53
I must be dimwitted. Why would they not like you if you've done transcribing for them, Merry? It would seem to me it should be the opposite.

Merry
10-06-11, 09:01
lol Janet.

They offered a short term free sub if you did some transcribing for them. I did the transcribing and then they said I could have the free trial but only for the county I had transcribed for (they didn't have the variety of records they do now at that time), not the whole country, which had been implied rather than stated at the start. I complained and they replied with an excuse so I complained again which led to them banning me from the site. I think they did actually warn me first, but I took no notice (I didn't believe they would do that!!) as I had only written to them a couple of times and I certainly wasn't rude or particularly pushy - just said I thought it was unfair that they didn't state exactly what a transcriber would get for free as, had I realised, I would have asked to transcribe for an area of use to me.

Merry, that would have left a very nasty taste in my mouth.
Just to let everyone know, if you have reasonable access to a LDS Family History Centre in the UK, The Genealogist, FMP and the library edition of Ancestry are available FREE. There are other subscription sites available too, but these are rather more specialist ones.
