I have scoured the 1861 census for him on FMP, but no sign of him.

Can anyone spot him, please?

Thanks for looking, Kate.

I'll have to search for his children, methinks.

Charles Purkis is probably there at number 39, but the page is torn:

RG09 piece 636 folio 215 page 34

All you see is

Charles........
M A ........
Charles.........

The second Charles has one more letter which may possibly be a G. Doesn't look like a P for Purkis, so did he have a middle name, or are they completely the wrong people!!!?

Thanks, Merry. I didn't think to do an address search.

It looks like him - I'll have to try to work out who is with him!

He had a daughter, Mary Ann, who is probably the M.A. there.

Children I have found:
Charles Henry 8 Jun 1823, Portsea St John
Mary Ann 14 Sep 1824, Portsea St John
Emma 28 Feb 1826, Portsea St John
George 3 Jan 1828 Portsea St John
Elizabeth ? 1824?

Charles Henry is with his own family in 1861.
