I can't remember - do you have the witnesses' names from your James and Mary's wedding?

I can't read them. Elizabethherts kindly got me a copy of the PR but the quality of the copy is poor. One of the witnesses is something Coulson or Coulton or similar and the other one isn't Smith. That's all I can say!! lol

They are both of this parish and the marriage was by licence.

Kensworth is in the south-western corner and Puckeridge is on the eastern borders of Hertfordshire. I'd guess they are about 20 miles apart.

Does the marriage licence still exist? If so it may hold clues if you are onto the right Smith lol!

Is there anything on the website re. marriage licences?

(Sorry, my green light has been on all day but I've been otherwise occupied. )

Merry, could you e-mail HALS to find out if the licence survives?

Just thought you might be thrilled at an update!

As I'm sure you will remember () I bought a marriage cert for a lady I have a photo of, because she was married to George Smith from Wadesmill Herts. I hoped George would turn out to be the son of my 3xg-grandfather, james SMith (tailor), but his father was John Smith (baker).

I now have a tree of 98 people attached to this George Smith (there are lots of cousin marriages and stuff which makes it all v complicated) waiting for something else good to happen, which just has!!

I just looked for the marriage of the parents of Jane Grout (Jane was the bride of George Smith), William Grout and Ann X. I have just found it in Hackney and the bride's name is Ann Smith and she is of the Parish of Standon in the County of Hertfordshire! (Could be a relative of George and his father John and/or a relative of my James Smith (the tailor)). One of the witnesses made me sit up though - she is Mary Langford, my 3xg-grandmother, who would marry my 3xg-grandfather, James Smith, the following year.

I still can't make the blood connection though because I can't access the PRs for Standon where I guess the Smith baptisms took place (Wadesmill being a hamlet in Standon)

Well done Merry. I'm pleased your Mary had the distinctive name of Langford. I hope you find the missing link with your Smiths soon.
